Taste of Washington Features Lake Chelan Wineries
By Dennis Rahm
The growth of the wine industry in the Lake Chelan Valley mirrors the significant expansion of vineyards and wineries throughout the state. When the first Taste of Washington was held in 1997, there were about 100 wineries in the state, compared to the nearly 500 that exist today.
Ten years ago, the Lake Chelan Valley had no operating wineries; today the region boasts a dozen boutique wineries, with three more expected to open later this year.

Taste of Washington ? which has been dubbed ?the ultimate wine experience? ? featured 200 wineries who offered tastings of over 800 wines to the 2,500 plus attendees. The wine was complemented by food samples from 60 regional restaurants. Local participants included Balsamroot Winery and Vineyard, Chelan Estate Winery, Lake Chelan Winery, Nefarious Cellars, Tildio Winery, Tsillan Cellars, Vin du Lac Winery and Wapato Point Cellars.
The Lake Chelan Wine Growers Association also had an information booth at the event to promote the Lake Chelan Wine Valley and to distribute their recently produced wine tour map.
Loni Rahm, Executive Director of the Lake Chelan Wine Growers Association, said the Seattle event provides an excellent venue to introduce a targeted audience of wine lovers to the Lake Chelan Wine Valley. ?Our booth had premier placement at the event,? Rahm stated. ?Lake Chelan was the first visual impression attendees had as they came in the door which gave us the opportunity to reinforce the relationship between Lake Chelan and premium wines!?
Rahm indicated that in comparison to last year?s event, she encountered a similar mix of people who were unfamiliar with the Lake Chelan Valley as well as those who were repeat visitors. She was pleased to notice however, a definite elevation of awareness about Lake Chelan wines. ?Wine enthusiasts are discovering the Lake Chelan wine experience, and are developing a great appreciation for our award-winning wines,? she said.
